Chapter 20

The grass and leaves were cool as Casey sat early Saturday morning in the park near the campus. She’d asked Jen to hold off on training this morning; she needed some time to meditate on her own. Today’s magic wasn’t something Jen could help her with.

She sorted through her memories stored in her mental glass bubble and replayed everything she could find on shields and wards. Her trainers had given her a good foundation, but the lessons from Hildegard and her grandpa were the ones she really needed. She had hours of lessons to sort through but watching them mentally only took minutes. She’d lived through the classes and was only reviewing the highlights.

Sitting cross-legged, hands on her knees, palms up, she focused on the magic. She decided she would try things none of her instructors had taught her. Mixing and brewing something new that she needed. They hadn’t faced vampires, at least not that they’d told her. She took her wards and expanded them to cover her body, her soul, protecting her mind, her memories, and her emotions. The lessons all witches had been given were to protect the mind and memories. If you had them, you could rebuild the rest, but an emotional attack had never been covered or considered.

She then went about creating an emotional shield, something that was new. It would be thin and flexible, and undetectable. Her hope was it would allow the attacker’s idea to enter, but between the shield and wards, trap the suggestion in a tiny glass bubble, similar to what she’d trapped Hildegard in—gods, was that just a couple of weeks ago? It felt like ages! Then it would be kept for study. Casey wanted to learn about the assault so she could more easily counter and possibly form her own emotional attack in the future.

Next, she layered on her human costume, the shield that blocked out the vampire and witch tells. This shield was becoming easier to slip in and out of. She’d decided Rowan was right and she was going to need to leave it on, outside of her interactions with Jude … or if she decided to get training from any of Rowan’s vampires.

She checked to make sure everything was set, then stood to return to the dorms. The shields and wards were an extra pressure on her mind, a drain on her power which she had to keep supplying energy to. It felt like she had a leak, but it was small, and her safety was worth it.

When she got back to the dorm room, Jen leapt up. “Time to shop!”

Casey scrunched up her face. “Um, no?”

“Yes! We need to get you new panties.”

“Look, Jen, my chest is small enough that I’ve decided to just go without a bra most of the time, and as for the panties,” she shrugged, “I dunno.”

“Well, I do, let’s go.”

Jen dragged her to a big store downtown with a huge selection. They had to weave their way through the women’s section with the bright new trends, high shoulder pads, and snazzy leg warmers.
